Wisdom from Teacher Lu Xia
As the Lunar Seventh Month, also known as Hungry Ghost Month ( August 23rd to September 21st ), approaches, we enter a sacred time when the veil between worlds feels thinner. It is believed that our ancestors return to visit, and wandering spirits may also roam the human realm.
This is not a time for fear—it is a time of gratitude, respect, and spiritual awareness. By following the right practices, we can honor our ancestors while staying spiritually protected. Below, Teacher Lu shares practical and heartfelt guidance for navigating this period with sincerity and clarity.

1. Connect Only with Your Own Ancestors
During Hungry Ghost Month, it is vital to honor only your own ancestral lineage.Opening your energy field to spirits outside your family line can disturb the harmony of your home and weaken your spiritual protection.
Keep your heart, prayers, and offerings directed only toward your own ancestors.
2. Show Respect According to Tradition
Sincerity is the foundation of all spiritual practices. Follow your family and cultural traditions when paying respect.
If you are living abroad, create a clean and quiet space at home with simple offerings to invite your ancestors.
If sincerity is missing, it is better not to do it at all—ancestors can feel your intention.
How you treat your ancestors today sets an example for how future generations will treat you.

3. Offer Kindness to Wandering Souls
Hungry Ghost Month is not only about your direct lineage. There are also wandering souls—friends, travelers, and distant relatives—who may pass by.
Teacher Lu suggests preparing a small, simple offering for them. This act of compassion:
Builds goodwill in the spirit world
Accumulates yin merit (阴德), a spiritual virtue that blesses you and your descendants
Helps ease the suffering of wandering souls
When you help others in the spirit world, you are also helping yourself.
4. Don’t Be Afraid—Be Respectful
Hungry Ghost Month is not something to fear. These spirits are not here to harm us—they are often our ancestors returning to visit.
Offering incense, food, or prayer is not superstition; it is an act of:
Honoring those who gave us life
Expressing gratitude for their blessings
Generating positive energy for future generations
Remember: How you treat your ancestors today teaches your children how to treat you tomorrow.

5. Strengthen Your Energy and Inner Will
Some people with weaker energy fields may feel more sensitive or unsettled during this month. This is normal and can be managed with daily practices:
Meditation or spiritual cultivation
Physical movement—walking in nature, exercising, or absorbing yang (sun) energy
Sincere prayer or chanting for inner peace
Protective visualization to seal your energy field
Stay grounded, strengthen your will, and your energy will naturally become more resilient.
A Time for Gratitude, Not Fear
Hungry Ghost Month is a sacred opportunity to:
Reflect on your roots and honor your ancestors
Accumulate yin merit for your descendants
Demonstrate respect and devotion for future generations
When we act with kindness, humility, and sincerity, we naturally shield ourselves from spiritual disturbance and invite blessings into our lives.
